My mechanical drawing instructor in college was a retired Lockheed engineer, (Mr. Gibbs). He had been on the team that converted a Lockheed 14 Electra airliner into a maritime patrol aircraft for the British purchasing commission in 1938.

The Hudson is a much overlooked aircraft, both the RAF and the RAAF had stunning successes with it.

The Hudson served with about a dozen squadrons in the RCAF in ww2, mostly with Eastern Air Command (EAC) in the ASW role, flying from bases in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. It was a Hudson from RCAF 113 squadron that was the first EAC aircraft to sink a submarine when Hudson 625 sank U-754 off the south coast of Nova Scotia on the 31st of July 1942.

The sole airworthy Hudson is at the Temora Aviation Museum in Australia. There is no airworthy Hudson in New Zealand at present but I believe one is being restored to fly. A Hudson was flown from Australia to Strathallan,Scotland in 1973 but that particular Hudson never flew again and is now in the RAF Museum in Hendon. That Hudson was formerly operated by Ad Astra in Australia.

The first RAF aircraft to shoot down a Luftwaffe plane. I believe Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac mentions this in his biography. It was his father who piloted that Hudson. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am sure most of you folks know this, but a RAAF Hudson put up such a spirited fight that Sabiro Sakai recommended the crew for commendation after the war. It was never issued but the name of the crew is known.

I was going to say but Colin Barron beat me to it that there is a flying Hudson at Temora. Hudsons flew with the RAAF.

My grandfather served with them in WW2. He was patrolling Bass Strait for submarines and saw nothing.
