Basically whales were fish who decided living in the sea was boring and moved to land, then they realized being a land animal was too mainstream and went to live in the ocean without the ability breathe underwater. Absolute power move.

Whale just straight up said "Return to fish."
radiogobrrrrrrr1949 (17 minutes ago)
The entire whale and dolphin family is the definition of screw this, they started as fish, grew lungs, lived on land for a while, decided to go back to being a fish, still keeping their lungs, and grew to the size of 2 London buses.
XerxesTheUndead (28 minutes ago)
The funny thing about whales is that they technically still have “legs” in the form of vestigial bones in their skeleton. If you look it up you’ll see a random group of tiny bones where their hip would be. It’s crazy

i do love how the entire underwater mammal lore is "huh so you need to worry about thirst on land? yea no we're going back"
henrykkeszenowicz4664 (52 minutes ago)
Whales are the most based animals on Earth. They took the concept of "return to monke" to an extreme and returned to fish.

Those prehistoric fish ancestors must’ve been like:

funfact for the ones who've never taken biology or didnt learn this in biology class: whales still have their bones and joints for what was once their legs, it stays dormant inside their body and never grows enough to become a limb, but its always there

Congrats to the person who time-traveled all the way back to take these pictures.

I love the idea that pre-historic whales evolved to live on land as mammals, hated it, and just evolved to live in the ocean again
Dell-ol6hb (10 hours ago)
It's interesting how many times throughout Earth's history there is a land animal that becomes aquatic and ends up becoming the dominant apex predators of the ocean
shadowsinmymind9 (23 hours ago)
So it went from rat- deer like to otter, to seal, to dolphin. Now it must become like a fish
