Could have gotten that same look using pre-mixed Pearl Grey - I just did it, but when I went to seal it with a satin clear coat, it gooked up like lard and made most of the color come out :( That happened before when I used the vinegar/steel wool and tea mixture. I could coat it the next day with the clear coat with no problems, though. I assumed it had something to do with the vinegar. Pretty sure there's vinegar in RIT pre-mixed dyes...so could be right. I'll try again and wait 24 hours before trying to seal; but maybe this info will be helpful to someone ;)

Please - if you are going to teach us how to dye wood using RIT dye, teach us but don't confuse the music with teaching.

I want 100% penetration on 1/16 " maple. I'm was thinking about using watercolor paint...the kind that comes in small tubes at the art store. Maybe soaking it and then let it dry out under compression to minimize warping. I want to then use in for highlights in a bow handle. A strip would be laminated with epoxy integrated with a contrasting wood. The bow handle will be shaped....hence the need for full penetration. I thought of making Micarta.....but this stuff is said to expand and contract with temperature and humidity and responds different than the wood. Micarta is made from layered cotton, linen, denim saturated with epoxy resin. Check it out on YOUTUBE. ITs often used in custom knife handles. Some use it in bows but I want to used wood.
