You do understand that the Gau 8 round's velocity is just over 3000ft/s, while the Sabot round travels at almost 6000ft/s. The difference between the 1# 30mm and the 49# Sabot is the all the additional wake up powder in that huge tank shell.

30mm is fine against armor when fired in quick succession, but you run out of ammo pretty quickly. A-10s are planes and are only in the air when air superiority is possible (So it probably won't get shot down) but a tank on the ground is in trouble if it's out of ammo. Tank explosive cannons are still as effective but the reason the A-10 has a lighter, fast succession cannon is because it could not be fast and accurately fire a tank gun.

I've never seen an A-10 carry an AGM-88 HARM.

The GAU-8 is the most efficient system against armor compared to any other type from it's design for an Aircraft. It would be too much stress and too limiting to fly with such a large gun in a nimble aircraft like the A-10. Instead of a single 120mm round, the 30mm API was designed to liquify Armor using DU density (More dense than lead) which combined with the velocity the gun powder produces gives it the ENERGY required to penetrate ANY armor in existence. & you can strafe multiple targets,
