I believe the horror aspect for me isn’t so much about whether the story’s premise was possible, but to lean into everything we do to animals …and humans that had the misfortune to be slaves, or genocide victims… on a mass scale in the past, present and probably future.

"What did people do? did they all become vegan? did they make better plant based meet? no, they fused other humans with animals"

I think human hunting isn’t that crazy a concept if people can dehumanize another group. During slavery some slave masters fed black babies to alligators. So I don’t think it’s crazy.

oh boy i wonder how fast kuru and other prion diseases would spread in that world. That's something i never see talked about in horror books with cannibalism in them, the diseases and effects of cannibalism on human bodies.

They didn’t… try and find a cure for all the animals in the world?

Knowing that humans have hunted humans in the past, that doesn't really sound unrealistic to me. Then again I don't know the exact context in which it was given, but humans can be reeally twisted. Maybe ill come back after i've read the book to report back! Interestingly a lot of people who have worked at slaughter houses have become vegans or vegetarians afterwards. Would recommend looking at that footage if anyone is interested, specifically local if you can. Brings you face to face with the things so many of us have payed for with our own money. Anyways, thank you for bringing this book into my radar.

I agree with you about the ending, but not about the puppy scene. Yes, it’s horrible. But it speaks to human hypocrisy that it becomes the most shocking part of the book. Much like the death of one dog in John Wick makes John kill countless humans. The exposition it contains is also necessary because it makes the views of the main character no longer unique or special. There’s a general air of doubt and mistrust as to the virus and the governments’ role in it. It makes Marcos even more of just an average person and a backdrop to the world-building.

This book really also shows how horrible humans can be.

I read this & honestly it was so powerful. It filled me with disgust, rage, horror, fear, sadness. I went through all 5 stages of grief reading it; I swear. I couldn't put it down. It was eye-opening. I could write an essay about this book, my god. The ending completely shattered my heart. It's a sick reality that humans are in fact capable of treating each other in the most brutal of ways.

Personally, I disagree on both the puppy and the ending scenes. Plenty other comments already gave a similar reasoning to mine on the puppy scene, so I won't go into it; but I wrote the final essay for my literary research class on this book, specifically on the recurring themes of misoginy and the dehumanization of the women in Marcos Tejo's life. The ending perfectly wraps up this underlying thematic narrative on top of the already overt themes of general dehumanization.

By no means am I vegan or vegetarian, but I would 100% give up meat if the only option was HUMANS as a meal choice. That idea's NASTY.
