To go entirely in the opposite direct from army level games you might look into modifying the samurai game "Test of Honour". This is a skirmish game that basically covers the same tech level as ECW, swords, pikes, muskets, etc. It would be useful for scenarios involving ambushing supply trains, foraging parties fighting over supplies, and raids.
