The distant rumblings of a train rolling into the outskirts of town as it slows to a halt. Sporadic hisses of air brakes among the clank and rattle of freight car couplers. Muted shouts of railroad workers--a short horn blast as a switching locomotive growls to life. Hello. Jim, from Jim's HO train Layout, here. Welcome to my world: a world of forbidding mountains, murmuring creeks, rolling meadows, and small-town streets. A world where miners, millers, farmers, sawyers, bakers, bankers and clerks ply their trades, thanks in part to the railroads. A railroad world, where hard-pounding double track plunges through towering chasms of rock, and lonely single-track meanders dreamily along echoing forested paths. Where lacy bridges reach into the mist to span the sky, and bustling sidings await chattering passengers. Freight yards grind and branch lines wind mysteriously through shadowed alleys of brick and bracken. Impressions from many years' trackside wanderings. In 7 by 4 feet.
