What hits hard is that his loneliness hurts him, but seeing his mom sad because of him and being powerless to do anything hurts him far more.

He owned and lived in a bus. He travelled around the USA and visited every VA hospital in the nation. He was a great actor and a wonderful human being.

Borgnine is so great in this heartbreaking scene. He deserved the Oscar he received.

Ernest was the nicest man ever. He'd sit and talk to you like you were his best friend. RIP

The hardest fact to face in life for some men is the fact they'll never be loved by anyone, never have friends, and no one will ever help you.

The moment my mother died is the moment I knew I would never be genuinely loved by another woman again for the rest of my life.

If they still made them like this, I'd still be going to the movies.

I’m 70 and unfortunately that’s the story of my life. I’ve lived it alone and will end it alone. I’ve helped so many, yet no-one has ever been there for me when I’ve needed help - they just leave me to cope alone. What a sad legacy for someone who has given so much. My epitaph will read: Unwanted, Unloved, Forgotten.
