I used a scotch-brite polishing head to get rid of all the pitting and imperfections in the metal and followed that up with a softer fiber polishing wheel with medium polishing compound and then finally the white buffing heads with light compound.

Did you use stainless steel wool? Stainless steel actually can rust when it was in contact with mild steel. or did the polishing prevent it against rusting? Can you do an update on how your headers look over time?
