Thats a rosy maple moth! They are native to North America, and you can encourage them to come to your garden by leaving the fallen leaves (where they hibernate) in your backyard undisturbed until they appear in spring!

To explain why this (rosy maple) moth snuggled into op's sweater a little better; no, he was not eating their clothes. Adult moths lose their mouth when they pupate because they have no need to eat anymore.
