Awesome recommendations! I love The House of Spirits. When I was in highschool, Isabel Allende came and spoke at my school, and one question we asked her was if she thought it was difficult to kill characters off after working so hard on creating them, and she said "It's very easy to kill someone."

You are awesome, Mel. Thanks for putting the titles in English and mentioning less well known books, because I want to read more Latin American literature (that's not Paulo Coelho, Gabriel García Márquez, or Isabel Allende.) It can be difficult to know what to search for, especially because I live in Africa.
