It actually makes sense that his initial transformation looks like this. Yamato is the sword that can separate man from devil. When Nero used it as a catalyst for his transformation it separated his devil trigger from his physical form creating the phantasm.

He's Vergil's son alright. He has white hair, kidda triggered his demon side, fixed Yamato and uses it no problem. Also, "Power, give me more...power!" which reminds me of the blue demon himself.

I never get tired of watching this. Also I love how Devil Trigger (Nero's Theme for DMC5) starts with the lyrics "I'll endure the exile" giving a nod back to this scene.
