for those needing to do this you can leave the entire clutch assembly alone.remove the cluth vent tube and then the starter bolts, there will be just enough room to turn the starter clockwise and then pull out.

I changed my starter without removing the clutches. Real pain getting it back in, but I got that bolt in. Set it in the starter then twisted in into place.

I just changed my starter on my 500 sportsman and you can change the starter without taking the clutch assembly off,

You don't need to remove the clutch, just loosen the bolt that hits the clutch and leave it in the engine
