well, to make it go higher, if you have the redstone blocks on east and west sides then after ten blocks put the redstone blocks facing north and south

Hmm... Does the redstone have to go up and down? Or could you acheive the same thing witha 3 wide stack of redstone blocks shifting side to side? Time for some testing!
