I do not believe The Terminator killed Sara's mother. When Sara was in the police station before The Terminator arrive, her mother was already on her her way to that police station from Big Ben. Sara's mother was expected to arrive at the police station with an hour's time.

I would give anything to have poor Kyle survive the first film, but it's a predestination paradox time loop. He never meets his own son until he's in his teens, and he always dies before the war, the final victim of a cyborg serial killer.

what if sarah left reese when the terminator was trying to break in the factory doors in the first movie? if she would have left him to go hide by herself, the terminator would have broke in, seen reese laying there alone, and would have ignored him in search of sarah. then possibly reese would have snuck up from behind, placing the last bomb in the machine with enough time left on the fuse for him to safely distance himself, and by then the authorities would have arrived and reese would probably have survived
