He didn't betray the Samurai out of disloyalty he simply believed in a stronger modern Japan...He still had his core Samurai principles

This scene always gives me chills. In his eyes is the wisdom and skill of a true samurai. He is fully prepared for what he knows will come when facing his former comrade.

This man was loyal because he obeyed his Emperor. Katsumoto was loyal because he disobeyed his Emperor. The duality is perfect.

Thank God someone uploaded this scene. Always loved this.

I've always loved this scene. The impression I get is that the General, while being fully aware of his stature and prestige as a samurai warrior and as an army officer, is nonetheless humble enough to give the American captain the respect he deserves. As Captain Algren himself puts it: "Everyone is polite. Everyone smiles and bows, but beneath their courtesy I detect a deep reservoir of feeling." General Hasegawa simply represents the epitome of all this.

And with only the slightest of nods, the general Hasegawa becomes one of my favourite characters. I love the writing in this movie.

Timothy Spall just nails it with three words. And his expression is perfect. Totally makes the movie.

Samurai is not just a Japanese using armor and sword. It's someone who really believes in honor in the same way he believes in his life and himself.

Bone chilling scene for me. You can see his confusion and new found respect when he found out the general assisting him is a samurai; and how proud the general was of this title yet shamed that he turned his back on it in order to remain loyal to the emperor. The general is the new age samurai. Thats probably why he still chose to commit seppuku when captured in battle.

He is Samurai! GLORIOUS DISPLAY!

You will rarely see that dignified demeanor in this modern society. I love that short shot of the samurai general. I wish to speak with and learn from such a man. That simple line, weighs a ton.
