Imagine meeting the closest thing to a god you have ever seen, and it's not only a WHALE, but it FLIRTS with you.

I had a dream the other day that I got a Hawaii pt II vinyl and that it had a bonus track called “Dream On”. The song was an extended version of this part and it sounded amazing

i imagine “The Whale” as someone’s secret admirer who had been writing letters to them under the name “The Whale”. eventually, they go on a date together and “The Whale” is complimenting the person when they finally say “Signed yours truly, The Whale” and the person has a look of happiness and shock as they pull in The Whale for a kiss.

I still think they made a big mistake by not having “signed your truly, the whale” be a full song because out of the whole song that this part is in, it stands out among the rest in more ways then one. First being that it follows a similar, but different flow compared to the rest of the song and secondly this whole 54 second bit is strong enough that people are going out of their way to listen to that one part so just imagine in “signed yours truly, the whale” if it was made into a full song, it’s strong enough with just 54 seconds it’s strong enough to have been made into a full 3 minute love song.

This part gives me such a vivid image. I see it as a small boat with fairy lights and a fancy dinner, underneath the moon and starlight sky…possibly sailing beyond the mortal world.

loads of people are making theories about what "the whale" is but the best one that i've found is that it's literally just joe hawley's "signature" for the album

The way I see it, this whole song is about someone drifting into death, and the whale is a metaphor for someone (most likely a dead partner) who's been swimming in the afterlife waiting for their arrival. In this part of Dream Sweet in Sea Major, the protagonist is between being alive and dead, and "the whale" comes to speak with them. The piano riff that plays just after "signed, yours truly, the whale" is the brief moment of clarity where they realize they are dying.

A medley of this and "O'er the waves" aka "The Loveliest Night of the Year" would be pretty sick.
