Tbh all you need to kill red lizards is to wait for them to open their jaw while running at you at a deeply alarming speed and then crouch and throw. Should go through their mouth and stun for long enough to grab the spear and then repeat.

One day I felt an urge to tame a red lizard, so I kept killing lesser ones in either outskirts or industrial til I got a red then fed it a bunch and it became the bestest of good boys, was a kind of fun self-imposed mission, would recommend trying it out (Just try to have a squidcada group or something near the lizard and den of choice)
