I used to think that Lucas was an f-boy who didn’t have enough backbone to choose one of the girls over the other because he wanted both of them. HOWEVER, maturing is realizing that Lucas was never torn between Riley and Maya, but rather, that he was torn between how best to love Riley. Openly choosing Riley meant hurting Maya, which would, in turn, hurt Riley. He never wanted to be with Maya, but he didn’t want to reject her, because of what that would mean for Riley’s feelings towards him. If he chose Riley and hurt Maya, Riley may not choose him back, for fear of betraying her best friend. He left the choice up to them, not because he couldn’t choose between them, but because he needed Riley and Maya to figure out what Riley being with Lucas would mean for her friendship with Maya. Like Josh, Lucas chose the long game. It just took me a long time to realize it.
