people in the comments always argue that the wizard was foreshadowed and that its on us for not seeing this tonal shift coming, but the wizard does not appear until CHAPTER 41. there was also no previous establishment that anything surreal or magical was possible in this universe, so of course the wizard plot being serious and dire seems like it was coming from left field. it was foreshadowed really poorly. eggbug says the wizard arc was planned from the beginning, but the execution has just been bad.

What I'm thinking and hoping is that this isn't a real plot line, that its a "dream" set up or meme plot that they wanted to do for their amusement. It genuinely just seems like the creators having fun and side questing an inside joke they had. I hope thats whats happening to the story right now TwT

this whole comic reminds me of another comic named "Eeveelution Squad".

My guess is that cat bird dog blew up and got them a lot of unexpected attention . And that they knew what the initial arc would be but they didn’t plan past that / for the fame and had to come up with more content. So they pivoted towards something more comedic or wacky.

when the creators first got backlash for this, they mentioned in their instagram comment section that this had (for some reason) been a plotline from the beginning, and that it wasnt a merch plug for plushies as many thought. they also said that the regular slice of life stories would return eventually, but it defiitiely is a strange 180 from the otherwise pretty normal lives of the characters beforehand

i think that it's too early to tell if the comic will actually be awful because of this turn. maybe this turns out to be a really fun fantasy series with all the hoped for character conflict that hooked us from the start.

I’m so glad someone is finally talking about this, I was so invested in the story until the wizard just popped up out of no where, I know he was an Easter egg, so it wasn’t really out of nowhere, but it just felt like it. I thought he would just appear in the background as a cute little side story or something, not a main character

tbh i don't think dog is a good character, and i don't think his character as it stands is worthy of being part of the title (especially bc hyena isn't). this isn't because he's a bad person, because he isn't. he's very pleasant, in fact. the problem is that he's written as a plot device, and also, as an immediate bird replacement for cat, as opposed to a new contrasting friendship; mostly the pacing of their friendship is far too fast, and dog really only acts as bird 2.0, except when he's moving the plot along (ex: telling cat that bird was probably uncomfortable about the kiss. personal preference, but i would've liked for cat to put at least some pieces together on her own, as this route makes cat read as oblivious and somewhat ignorant of other's feelings). dog's writing especially stands out when compared to bird and cat's, because while they read as people with depth, he does not. in fact, i'd go so far as to say that hyena reads as more of a person than dog does
