They happen to be standing further away from the tracks than people do at a station. Think of the tube. They were not in any danger.

with all the thought put into the safety crap why is'nt there a one way gate off to one side so they can leave maybe only activated by the signal person.

Instead of the double gates, which traps people on the tracks, another tactic that seems to work is adding a median between oncoming lanes, which prevents people from changing lanes in order to go around the gates.
