What's more unrealistic about this movie scene is that the magma is so close to the surface. But in reality, the Earth's core — covered with molten rock, is 2,900 km deep; which is thus invisible due to shadow. Plus, Mercury is the only planet in our Solar system that has a largest core which is more than 80% bigger and 3,600 km across; if a sinkhole, or a fault, appears in any region of Mercury — it could be visible from the surface, especially the magma.

And the oddest thing about movie faults is that magma is always close to the surface when faults open up. So awesome when this happens in every movie fault scene.

1:30 They could’ve left it with a “happy” ending with the fault stopping it’s movement right there but noooo! They had to cut the US in two. In spite of all the bogus geological stuff it’s overall a good disaster movie. My only problem is the quick zooming in and out in some scenes. Why did they film it that way?

Woah. Those are the biggest fault lines so far. Man, what happened to the magma in fault lines in other movies? Magma just doesn't show in fault lines anymore. That pissed me off so much everytime I thought about it.
