You really have to get the hide as thin as possible without being too thin. This takes a meticulous attention to detail and a lot of effort. Also, if you don't smoke the hides, it is necessary to oil them with some type of leather conditioning product like neatsfoot oil. Otherwise they can become vulnerable to moisture and vermin, and it also makes them more supple.
