Fortunately this is only moderate turbulence. If the turbulence were severe, it would be difficult to even operate the touchscreens, and baggage compartment contents and galley food carts would be loudly banging.

Iâm scared to death even when itâs only 10-15 minutes of turbulence! Canât imagine how stressful it was for the passengers to handle this for 14 damn hours

This isn't severe. Like the poster below mentioned, stuff in the overhead bins would be falling out, stuff banging and people screaming. This was moderate.

Moderate turbulence at most. With "severe" things would have been coming out of the overhead bins.

When the bins fly open and everything loose is tossed, THEN it's severe. this is moderate chop. nothing to be worried of.

If itâs like this for the entire flight it must have been quite unpleasant , imagine having meals and going to restrooms .. I recently flew from Seattle to Singapore and baring a few bumps over Philippines the flight was quite smooth

Airliners systematically avoid severe turbulence. It is physically intolerable, tends to generate G Forces, panic, and can damage the airframe and the cabin and wound people on board. The only case in which airliners may be caught in severe turbulence is if entering clear air turbulence, which cannot be seen, does not show on Weather Radar since it is dry air and very often hits the aircraft suddenly giving the pilot no time to reduce to penetration airspeed or tell people to fasten their seat belts. In turbulence associated with thunderstorm cells the Radar shows the degrees of activity very well - in different colours, from purple to green - giving the pilot the option to fly around - the Controller must find a way to approve - below or above, flying around being the safest way. The aircraft may even delay the departure and wait on the ground if the flight planning determines that passing in a given area at a given time will be too risky.

Once you get over the fear of flying completely, you will find that it is easier to fall asleep with plane shaking.

Thatâs not even close to severe turbulence. The empty cup was still standing. Iâm sure it was still uncomfortable.

Was it over the Pacific or was the route going north over Japan, Russia, Arctic? I find that to not have much turbulence

I like this kind of fellow passengers. All silent during the turbulence. Just minding their business. No one's screaming.

I fell asleep on a long haul once and forgot to fasten my seat belt. Woke up by my head hitting the top of the widow where it curves back into the overhead lockers. There's a reason you need to fasten your seat belt in turbulence

That's Moderate T. You will know Severe T. when the people start to scream and get thrown about.

I like how everyone has cocky comments about this not being âsevereâ. I fly often and this is pretty intense. You canât see turbulence. You feel it; experience it. So why not SHUT UP.

More than 15 mins of that and I would be puking... your nerves might have been shot, but your body is solid. For some reason, I wouldn't have been able to cope. Not afraid of turbulence since i fly every 3 days, but I cant fight off the nausea... your vid has me shaking at the thought of several hours like that

This is terrifying.. 14 hours of that? Did they ever explain what happened and why they couldn't get around the weather?
