I think it's more that people are disappointed that they're not playing as Joel. I guarantee most of those people don't have problems with games that starred female characters as the main protagonist from the start. Just look back to MGS2 when it was revealed that Raiden was the main character and not Solid Snake, that bothered a lot of people and the reason is people generally don't like changes like that.

I never played the last of us, but from what i gathered over the internet, the problem that some people have with this game is not merely the fact that the main character is a lesbian, but it's more complex than this. It's about the way naughty dog execute in the game, which feels forced and unnatural, only to push an agenda, which no one cares about to begin with. Apparently, most people are too stupid to explain to themselves why they have issues with this game
