Mate they were making it up as they was going - they had no reason to stop you. They were bored and thought it would be fun to hassle a car owner. Why didn't ask for your details? They knew what they were doing was unlawful.

They can search your person they can’t search your car unless they have reasonable grounds that means they have to fully explain their reasons for the search. They were vague with their explanation they had no right and you should make a complaint.
