I agree that LSD has a profound personal effect (especially the first time). As a musician in the mid '60s I was there to see how the experience was positive for some and a big mistake for others. Over time, I saw what a very spiritual and introspective thing for me turned into just another high for others. For me I felt it cheapened the whole thing. For instance, I had a bandmate who would do two tabs of STRONG windowpane and then go sit in the waiting area of a garage while he his tires rotated!

That’s interesting. When John says in that acceptance speech ‘thanks for the purple hearts’ i have always read into it as him joking about the purple heart you are awarded in the military. So i always thought, with the people he was addressing, that this was the joke. I still think that is what he meant, but I never knew about the other idea that he was referring to drugs.
