Battling red represents you battling your self as you played as red in the first game. If you beat him it means you are stronger than you were before. Too confusing sorry

I thought there was an unspoken rule that you don't say a word when the battle music VS Red starts playing, but I guess that rule is little known.

This was the only battle I didn't want to win. Hard to see Red lose. 

The unfair thing about Pokemon is that the game tells you what Pokemon your opponent is about to use giving you the ability to choose the weakness of your opponent being able to take down Pokemon 10 to 15 levels above you easily. If the game did not tell you what Pokemon your opponent was about to send out the game would be like 10 times harder.
