I imagine that this is the "bad ending" of the Half-Life timeline, where Gordon Freeman never arrived to save humanity and the suppression field eventually wiped out the human race. After the Combine extracted all of Earth's resources, they completely left, and this is what remains.

It'd be pretty funny if you put a jumpscare warning at the start of the game, but put no jumpscares, so people would be paranoid through the entire playthrough

Sure, every human is gone, and that's scary. Clearly worse however, is the fact that a whole interdimensional empire's presence, possessing advanced technology and capable committing unspeakable things, is just gone. Not even the automated systems, such as Overwatch or heavy machinery, seem to be active. Even the invase species on the other side of the spectrum, the organic ones from Xen, are not present. No traces of recent conflicts. Not a hint of the Gman either.
