Hummingbirds go into torpor to save energy, protect themselves from dehydration, lack of food, or to rest after long migratory flights. It appears that they are dead but they are not. Heart rate, normally 500+ beats per minute, slows to 50 or so; breath rate also. It is a state between deep sleep and hibernation. Don't disturb them, or assume they are dead, just leave them alone and they will naturally wake up and move on when they are ready.
