I had a similar experience with this boss fight. I didn't do it on purpose. So I was down to 4 hearts, and I couldn't recover them. 4 hearts is basically a one hit and your dead. He was low on heath as well. I was scared, and full of adrenaline. When I saw the flurry rush icon I hit it like my real life depended on it. I beat him just like that.
