The Tarantula Hawk has one of the most painful stings on the planet. A buddy of mine was stung on the arm and he likened it to being struck by 50,000 volts of electricity. The pain was blinding and disabling. On a scale of 1-4 it is one of only two insects in the world to rate a 4. You were very brave to handle that insect in the manner you did and lucky to not have pissed it off!! Cool vid. I love the Sonora Desert!

That is so cool that you rescued that wasp. They really are very beautiful, but few would bother to rescue one from drowning because it's a bug, and a wasp at that, and so many people are intimidated (rightly so!) by stinging insects. I commend you on your curiosity and your compassion.

I like how he appriciates the rescue. When he buzzes off he reminds me of the ending of Anton Chigur from No Country For Old Men. " Take this but you never saw me " LOL!!

I liked the comment about showing something for scale, and I didn't hear anyone volunteering to use their hand or finger! XD Definitely a pretty bug - especially when the sun lights up that purple-green velvet body. Thanks for the show! :-)

One of these somehow got into my house, and I didn't know it until I stepped out of the shower into my bedroom, and he came out from behind the curtains.....and YES, he sounded JUST like a helicopter. Scared the bejeebers out of me!

Ooo, I love these things. I used to catch them up in the Heber Overgaard area of Arizona when I spent time up at my uncle's cabin. And when I mean catch, I mean with my hands. They are actually very timid things. I've seen em get up to around 1.5 inches. Maybe they can get bigger.

have saved thousands of small animals like this from drowning in the bird baths. they always seem to appreciate it. i just use a twig and they crawl on it then i put it in a place where they can dry off and regain their senses. we have these t hawks here in the sierras. they like to feast upon the yarrow flowers

Me too. The tarantula hawks will not sting unless you mess with them.
