a few facts: the tau were discovered in M35 by a mechanicum explorator fleet, they were brutish xenos without anny tech but they decided to exterminatus it anyway, but then a warp storm apered over t'au, forcing the mechanicum ship to crash land, the tau salvaged it and were cut off 6 milenia from the rest of the universe, giving them time to develop, they got a headstart, humainty didn't, if the Imerium was left alone for 6 milenia, they'dd almost rival the necrons in tech

the imperium WILL try and crush the tau if the greater good carries on converting mining worlds and whole imperial guard regiments as it is, like the emporer himself says leaving the imperium is technically herecy, the tau way of life offers a better quality life then the underscum dwellers of imperial hive worlds, the imperium either can convert to the greater good or (attempt) to destroy it.

The Imperium's Tech level rivaled that of the Necrons back before Technology was worshiped, back when innovation was commonplace, and actually, the Tau were at WAR with each other for a loooong time, that war ended when the Ethereals stepped in.
