The Punisher is a perfect example of how to write a character who is both badass and pitiful. At his core, who is Frank Castle? A grieving father and husband, and a Marine addicted to war. Everything good in his life is gone. His only lifeline from falling into his addiction to war is dead. All he has left is a hopeless war on an enemy of his own choosing: crime itself. Ironically, his existence absolves the more pure heroes such as Spider-Man and Daredevil of the dirty work they'd need to do like a dark messiah, but there is nothing left for him. No life saver to rescue him from the Hell of his own making. A good man damned by the perfect set of circumstances conspiring to lead him to a fate of his own making.
