Its a dark energy portal that is linked to Malefor whos in the dark realms,past the gate of convexity.Its kinda like a portal for emails in a way.What it does is at midnight (when the eclipse occurs) it allows Gaul to access Malefors power,so he can open the portal to convexity from his end since they no longer have Cynder.Malefors power is dark and fulled by rage,so when spyro is caught in it,part of Malefors power is transferred to Spyro.Since it is powered by rage,it sends spyro into a rage

Spyro wasn't always until he got caught in the beam of eternal darkness (i think is what it might be) and got corrupted by darkness but in Dawn of the Dragon he turned to Dark Spyro after Ignitous died and was able to gain back control easier then in eternal night

But since when Spyro first went into the portal, he was already angry, therefore linking the dark power he gained to his anger, and since it was during the eternal night, it made it stronger, and he wouldnt need the dark power of Malefor to become so powerful. So since this power was linked to his anger, when he lost Ignitus, he became angry and BAM! :D wolla!
