basically i did the the paper towel method.. where i put 5 or 6 seeds into a wet paper towel, and kept it wet...the seeds sprouted in about a week, the more round seeds had a higher germination rate while none of the shrivled looking seeds germinated.... im at the stage now where i am putting them in soil and 18 oz cups...

I planted lychee seeds in a gallon milk container, it was plastic. They all germinated. I has 6 inch seedlings in three weeks. Problem is they suffered as I tries to harden them off. Still have three. The container was acting as a green house. Next time I will cut holes in the container and let it sit for a few weeks before I remove the plants. Just a tip for the frugal gardener

Germination is very easy, but the big problem is that the seedlings refuse to grow further after the first vigorous growth and gradually wither and die. Some say it is a matter of micro mineral deficiency, but it is unknown what nutrients are needed. Some others say that it is better to sow directly in the ground. It is an almost tropical tree that will grow in areas with mild frostless winters. Very suitable for S Florida, but can be tried in the South coastal areas of the US in a very sheltered position and protection in the case of below freezing temperatures.

My area is around 70-100 degrees, but I don't think it will grow fruits in California. More like Florida due to high in humidity and warmth. I grow mine for fun and the challenge. Moist, but not too wet. They love water, but make sure you have a very good drainage though.
