It depends upon the person. During the early days of the infection he's probably witnessed many of his friends and family become infected. Perhaps even in some cases he's had to put them down, which could be very traumatic for a person to do... to kill someone they love... even if the thing they are killing are no longer that individual it still bears the person's face.
