Villa Lobos is perhaps the most accomplished self taught musical composer in the history of music. This concerto is full of piano color, of orchestral color, the ideas are full of mood and character, there is genuine pathos and a real message of atmosphere and effect. I would have to say that it is truly great music, and to write on this level without ever studied music formally is nothing short of amazing and marvelous.
