Hollywood censorship is still ruining films. The script had a completely different ending showing a masculine more true to character gangster. Way better than both versions that were filmed But the original ending was never shot. And Like others have stated they had to make Tony a bitch because of the times. Read this from American film institute and wikipedia:::The script ends with Tony staying in the building, unaffected by tear gas and a multitude of bullets fired at him. After the building is on fire, Tony is forced to exit, guns blazing. He is sprayed with police gunfire but appears unfazed. Upon noticing the police officer who had been arresting him throughout the film, he fires at him, only to hear a single "click" noise implying his gun is empty. He is killed after the police officer shoots him several times. A repeated clicking noise is heard on the soundtrack implying he was attempting to fire while he was dying

This ending was shot when the film had trouble getting released due to censorship. There were concerns that it glorified the gangster lifestyle and showed too much violence. So instead of being simply gunned down, he is convicted by the system and excecuted. The censors still didn't accept the film with the new ending, that's why it was never used.

The 1980's tony was much manlier at the end.

I prefer the ending where he tries to break for it and gets shot.

You never saw Paul Muni character after his arrest, just the judge sentencing and the hanging. He wasn't needed in the scenes.

Better to die at gunfight with the police, than to be ignominiously hanged. If I were a mobster I would wish so.

@CameronS654321 Frankly I did not even know it existed the 2005 special edition DVD of Scarface (1983) came with Scarface (1932) and this was one of the special features.

Hanging? He should have gotten the chair, it's cooler at least. It was used in Illinois at the time. Assuming this was in Chicago.

That's how I was explaining the similarities between the endings to both versions of Scarface. Of course, things had changed between 1932 and 1983.
