Each is his own apprentice. No one hires a person to train them. You work hard and stay at a job until you've learned as much as you can. Then, if you're independent-minded, creative, or ambitious, you'll get let go. On to the next bigger wave~!!

It is difficult-- but you'll know a surfer by the attitude they carry to work, and their deeds. I've never met an unhappy surfer. :)
