That is little bit worn camshaft phaser vanes. I had this noise on my mk6 gti, after replacing vanes inside cam phaser, is sounds like new.

Hi - never solved the problem- VW service all say it's normal --- it's a valve that lets air into exhaust ... but I'm sure it can be made quiet by replacing something (non critical)... car still going
