She's so incredibly beautiful! I was very sad to learn how awful her life became...but delighted that she managed to pick herself up again.

I first saw this movie back in the early 1980's and loved it. The storyline was sad, poignant with a tragic ending. I have watched the movie many times since and it has never failed to produce a tear in my eye at the end. The photography in filming the movie is second to none and to cap it all off, the continual theme music played throughout the movie is Mozart's 21 Symphony. Anybody watching the movie couldn't help be moved by it. The movie is roughly based on a true event that occurred in the 19th century

I always saw that as indicating that they had no other choice due to finances and the trouble that they were in, Not necessarily as an indication that they would now hate eachother due to these difficulties. Their actions at the end of the film (caressing, embracing, tears, etc.) doesn't suggest a decline into eventual hostility. But again everyone is free to see the story as they like and there is no use in creating arguements over it.

When I lie in bed and listen to the dawn chorus at 4.30 am and the birds singing, I always think of the final scene in Elvira Madigan

one of the saddest and most moving endings in film history.

*I meant "butterfly". That was a spelling error. Apologies. Continuing, yes I have heard of the 1940's version, but it is difficult to find and I have not seen it. I am very familiar with Widerberg's work. Have you read his biography? Well worth it if you understand Swedish. As for being a "realist", realists don't run off with married men. If we are discussing the "real" couple, then the truth is no-one knows their reactions for certain, no movie can truly depict that.
