Ebirah, Horror of the Deep and Son of Godzilla are two of my favorites of the Showa era because I felt like they were a breath of fresh air for the series. While they aren't on an epic, grandiose scale, they are still have very entertaining stories with likable charismatic characters that carried me through the parts without the monsters, never letting me get bored. I felt that that the smaller scale worked to their benefit as it tends to get tiring when each entry in the series all of Japan or even the whole world is at stake.
