Ha I love how calm this guy is and then after he plays, he gives you this look like, "I'm the shit and I know it."

Isn't the first step to playing faster buying an Ibanez?

speed may not be everything, but it's still awesome!

@PIERO592, the reason why 2 note per string licks are more difficult to play fast is because your pick has to skip 'over' the string you just picked to get to the next string. For example, when picking A minor pentatonic scale, you play: down/up on the low E string and your pick now has to skip over the low E string to get to the next string (A) for its downstroke. This problem doesn't exist with 3 note per string scales, so that's why 2 note per string licks are harder.

Good points. What I find the most important indicator of proper technique is the tension and stiffness of the wrist. The looser and more relaxed it is, the more confidently you can play. If you realize that the wrist is getting stiff, that means that you are pushing too far of your capabilities. The you just have to practice at lower speeds with proper technique to get your brain and muscles used to the movements (playing is mostly about training your brain to control your hands more precisely)

@Kevin Rutherford, alternate picking does not give a more aggressive sound than economy/directional picking. I explain why here: Economy Picking For Guitar - How Improve Guitar Picking Technique

The biggest mistake wannabe shredders make is concentrating on their left hand and not their right (for right handed players).

High action helps mainly with keeping your playing clean at faster speeds, especially with sweep picking. It takes a little more pressure to press down the note, BUT it also means that as soon as you release the string you played just a little bit - it will already be muted. This helps to ensure that only one note will be sounding at a time (making playing cleaner). This carries over from sweep picking to regular scale playing. Your hands adjust very easily to higher action in terms of strength.

Finally, an intelligent guitarist giving intelligent instruction/suggestions/advice. No hype, No ego. No "I'm so cool". His physics example regarding a thin pick is correct. I could see it immediately, just never thought of it before. Basics being simple are usually overlooked. In this case, the basic is the pick.
