This is CBS slapping a label on a corpse and expecting fans to just eat it up. They would have been better off just coming up with something wholly original if they weren't planning to respect the pre-established canon.

I still think they should have gone forward in time, not backward. Forward, past the timeline of Voyager.

To coin a Star Wars phrase:

SO...what it boils down to is, the team that was gonna ensure a nice continuation of canon, is now the guarantee that this series will have nothing whatsoever to do with any previous series. ... Wow... It's like they really really want this show to fail. To anybody who wonder how to put a stop to end the madness - don't get a CBS All Access subscription, and don't watch the show on any streaming service you happen to already have that carries it. It's the only way. Money talks.

Prediction: response is going to be so bad that they will put it on, for free, on CBS, possibly during the summer or other holidays just to burn through what they get stuck with and, as soon as it's done, it will vanish and never be heard or though of again.

It is total arrogance on their part to think they can screw up a beloved franchise and then think they can charge money. We've watched 6 different star trek shows for free, and these morons think the fans will pay to watch another one that wouldn't do well if it was free

I heard there is licencing problems with Discovery.  Therefore show had to be set in the kelvin timeline which means the show does not conform to Star Trek cannon and that's why the Klingons, the crew uniforms and so on are so different. I also heard Bryan Fuller has been fired from the show because Fuller said the show would be a mess if the licencing was not fixed up and people would hate Discovery. Apparently Fuller has been proven right as the writers brought in a sample audience to watch the show. After watching the show the sample audience said the hated the show. Which also came as a shock to CBS All Access management who where also hoping people would subscribe to the new channel after watching Discovery.

"If the fan base is not behind the project it will fail... Badly."

This is exactly why CBS and Paramount went hardcore rabid dog on making Star Trek fan films. They don't want a Youtube classic Star Trek to upstage their Netflix garbage that looks like Mass Effect on a green screen with minimal props.
