Welcome to Bret’s Garage! On my channel I make weekly videos about cars and mountain biking.
I have a 2018 VW Golf-R that I plan to modify. Please subscribe to follow me on my adventures as I do upgrades to my MK7.5 Golf R.
I also have a 2006 VW Jetta TDI that’s been modified with a 2056 Turbo. I’m currently doing a full engine tear down to diagnose the previous problems I was experiencing. Please subscribe to follow my progress on my highly modified TDI.

I helped my friend install a 6 puck and single mass on his 1.9pd and it sounded about as bad as this (maybe worse) on first start. We seriously thought we messed something up lmao. Good to see it's fairly normal before it's completely broken in.

This sound is do the fact that the flywheel is under 25lbs, not because it is dual or single mass. I just put a 9lb single mass flywheel in my wife's 2000 TDI VW Golf and when you have the 5-speed in neutral it is loud.

Try damping the 5th gear cover tin. It is ringing out like a steel drum. I use 3 layers of the Dynamat extreme 1/16" stick-um stuff. It won't eliminate it 100% but does a great deal to make that noise tolerable.Try putting your hand over the cover and see if it does not help.

I had this problem, thought it was flywheel chatter only but it got worse and turned into squealing on clutch engagement. Was a bad throwout bearing.

just had a solid conversion in a 2002 focus 1.8tdci, it does sound a bit agricultural but nothing like that! definitely a tractor-esque sound going on... took the garage 10 hours of labour to get the job done. fucking take my wallet...

What causes the chatter sound at idle?

The problem is the lightened flywheel, not saying all are the same, but for your own good, stick with the heaviest flywheel that is capable to dampen the vibrations of the engine and not let them in the gearbox.

I have a single Mass flywheel on my 06 Jetta TDI manual and it's rattling like this but not as loud and sporadically. sometimes I start it up and it doesn't make any noise and then the next time it will do it for 10 seconds and then the next time it'll do it for 2 miles?? smf g60 Sachs clutch

while you are in neutral and the rattling noise is present, if you move slightly the gear lever into 3rd or 4th position, do you notice the rattle level changes?? if never done that, have try and tell me.
