I'm a graphic designer and an amateur musician at best, but absolutely LOVE this theme song created by Randy Newman. I sing it every time I hear it, and love the complexity of it. I'm always astounded by folks like you who can hear and interpret what's going on in this composition, and then play it exactly as it sounds. Thanks for your musical gift, thanks for taking the time to explain and share it, and as always, thanks to the talented musicians who create this stuff out of thin air. Without musicians like you, this life would be a LOT less enjoyable.

Taking a moment here to expound on the use of the third in the bass in musical compositions. I talk about this a couple of times in this tutorial, and I recommend that players experiment often with their chord voicings. Both the third and the fifth in the bass are used quite craftily by Newman in his Monk theme 7th chordings. They richen basic chords, add color, and provide character to the harmonic line. Try a C chord with the tonic C in the bass, and then play the same chord with the E in the bass. Experiment with other chords: the G with Eb, the A with F, the F# with D, etc. These "churchy"-type sounds expand the musical palette. They can be found in the more sophisticated pop structures, but a close listen to classical music reveals that these voicings were used brilliantly by the masters and help explain how they could develop their themes with such variety, depth and length.

I’m so excited to have found this; THANK YOU! Hardly anyone around me has ever watched “Monk” or knows this fabulous song, which really made me love the show. Husband likes to play “Short People” to drive me crazy, but when I get this down...watch out! Like others, I am in awe of your talent, and do so appreciate your sharing.
