As you can see the guy in the movie was hit with a breakaway bottle and he was hit with the side which instantly shatters it. Jon was hit with the bottom rim which, sugar glass or not, is one of the hardest parts of a bottle. I now realize every bottle thrown at jon hit him with the rim.
